Heat pump water heater rebates in Canada: where they stand in October 2026

As of October 2026, we found heat pump water heater rebates of $1,000 from BC Hydro, $500 from Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program (bundle path only) and $550 from Save Energy NB. Each has different equipment tests, and none is automatic.

Heat pump water heater rebates in Canada are scattered across utilities and provincial programs, and each one tests eligibility differently. This explainer collects the offers we confirmed on official pages in October 2026. Programs change without much notice, so treat every number below as "as of October 2026" and confirm with the administrator before quoting a customer.

British Columbia: $1,000 from BC Hydro

The short answer: $1,000 for replacing a primary electric tank, with a tier-list test.

BC Hydro's rebate page lists $1,000 for an electric heat pump water heater, under the Home Renovation Rebate Program that BC Hydro runs with the Province of BC and FortisBC. A bonus of up to $2,000 is listed for completing more than one upgrade. The conditions include:

  • the existing water heater must be electric and the home's primary water heater;
  • the new unit must be listed in Tier 2 or higher on NEEA's Advanced Water Heating Specification Qualified Products List;
  • installation by a licensed contractor with a GST number and a valid BC business licence for the trade;
  • no emergency replacements, and no replacing an existing heat pump water heater;
  • application within six months of the invoice date.

NEEA is revising that tier list; see our story on the version 9 draft. Separately, the income-qualified CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program has covered heat pump water heaters, but its rules changed for invoices dated from July 6, 2026, so check that page directly.

British Columbia: gas water heaters through FortisBC

The short answer: up to $800, only as an add-on for oil or propane conversions.

FortisBC's Connect to Gas page lists up to $800 for adding a natural gas water heater, but only alongside an eligible furnace or boiler, for existing homes converting their primary heat from oil or propane. A $1,000 bonus needs a pre-qualification code before December 31, 2026 and a paid invoice dated before March 31, 2027. Work must be permitted and installed by a gas contractor licensed with Technical Safety BC.

Ontario: $500 in the bundle path

The short answer: $500, but not as a single upgrade.

Save on Energy's Home Renovation Savings page lists $500 back on qualified heat pump water heaters that are ENERGY STAR certified. The rebate appears only in the bundle path, which begins with a home energy assessment and requires two or more upgrades. The program is delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with Ontario government support.

New Brunswick: $550 from Save Energy NB

The short answer: $550 for an ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater.

Save Energy NB lists $550 for an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater and $400 for drain water heat recovery with an efficiency of 42% or more. The page refers to program guidelines for full eligibility.

Side by side

The short answer: three different tests for three different programs.

Program Amount Equipment test Notable condition
BC Hydro Home Renovation Rebate $1,000 NEEA Tier 2 or higher Must replace a primary electric tank; no emergencies
Ontario Home Renovation Savings $500 ENERGY STAR certified Bundle path only, after an energy assessment
Save Energy NB $550 ENERGY STAR certified See program guidelines

The practical point is that one model can qualify in one province and not another. A unit on the ENERGY STAR list is not automatically on NEEA's tier list, and the reverse is also true. Contractors who work across provincial lines, or who buy from a national distributor, should keep a short internal sheet of which models pass which test, and re-check it whenever a program page changes.

Elsewhere

The short answer: we could not confirm others from official pages.

We did not confirm a current heat pump water heater rebate on official pages in the other provinces or territories during this check. Some agencies blocked automated access, so absence here does not mean no program exists. Our areas pages list the efficiency agencies in each region.

Analysis: what it means for contractors

This section is our analysis.

  1. Lead with the condition, not the number. "Up to $1,000, if your current tank is electric and it isn't an emergency" prevents disappointed callers.
  2. The no-emergency rule shapes your marketing calendar. BC Hydro's exclusion means planned replacements are the rebate market. Campaigns aimed at ageing tanks before they fail suit that rule; urgent no-hot-water ads suit everything else. Our heat pump water heater marketing and no-hot-water ads services split the two on purpose.
  3. Date every rebate page. A visible "checked October 2026" line is honest and easy to update.

We are a marketing newsroom, not an installer or program administrator.

Frequently asked questions

Which provinces had a heat pump water heater rebate in October 2026?

We confirmed offers on official pages from BC Hydro in British Columbia, Save on Energy in Ontario and Save Energy NB in New Brunswick. Other programs may exist; check your provincial efficiency agency and utility.

Can a homeowner get the Ontario rebate for a heat pump water heater alone?

Not according to the Save on Energy page we checked. The $500 heat pump water heater rebate sits in the bundle path, which starts with a home energy assessment and requires two or more upgrades.

Does BC Hydro's rebate cover emergency replacements?

No. BC Hydro's page says emergency replacements are not eligible, the existing unit must be the home's primary electric water heater, and a licensed contractor must do the installation.

Are federal heat pump rebates available for water heaters?

The federal programs we track are aimed at space-heating heat pumps. We did not find a federal rebate specific to heat pump water heaters as of October 2026.
